One thing decides whether this goes smoothly: firmware version v425 or later. Earlier versions carry an expired security certificate that makes the secure connection to GuestCharge fail outright, and since we only accept secure connections, there's no workaround. If your station is on older firmware, get it updated (EVBox or your installer can do this) before starting. With that done, the rest is a Bluetooth setup from your phone.

Before you start, check you have

  • Firmware v425 or later on the station
  • The EVBox Connect app (App Store / Google Play)
  • The security code, which comes in the installation packaging, typically printed on a large cardboard cutout
  • About 20 minutes

1Find the charger via Bluetooth

Open the app and connect to your charge point over Bluetooth. While you're here, save the charge point's modem number. It looks like EVB-XXXXXXXXX and you'll need it twice: once for our wizard, once during pairing.

2Add the charger in your GuestCharge dashboard

Run the onboarding wizard with the modem number from step 1.

3Authorise the app

Enter the security code from the packaging and press Authorize.

4Set the access control

This step is what stops your charger giving electricity away. In Charger Access Control:

  • Enable Activate using charge fob/key
  • Disable Auto-start

With auto-start on, anyone could plug in and charge without going through billing.

5Enter Installer Mode

Tap the Installer Mode button at the bottom of the screen, and enter the same security code again when prompted. Tap Continue.

6Point the charger at GuestCharge

  1. Tap Charging Manager Platform (this page can take a moment to load)
  2. Select the first option, Different Backend URL
  3. Enter: wss://ocpp.guestcharge.co/ followed by the modem number, like wss://ocpp.guestcharge.co/EVB-123456789
  4. Tap Save, then Select

7Save and reboot

Tap Save, wait a few moments, then tap Reboot the charging station.

How you know it worked

After the reboot, the charger shows as connected in your GuestCharge dashboard.

If it won't connect

  • Firmware first, always. Below v425 the secure connection fails no matter what. Confirm the version before chasing anything else.
  • Check the backend URL and modem number for typos
  • Confirm the station has a working internet connection
